Greece avoids bankruptcy amid protests

Politicians voted, civilians rioted, now we wait for eurozone finance ministers to vote on whether to unlock the next round of bailout funds for Greece. Major European indices are modestly higher in the wake of Lucas Papademos successfully winning enough support for his basket of cuts. The pictures from the streets of Athens are stunning, and prompt countless questions. We need to hear whether the eurozone will emerge stronger with an austerity-plagued Greece than it would be without it. Linda will assess the economic cost of the cuts for Greece.

The Obama administration tables its fiscal blueprint later this morning, but plenty of details are already known. A $1.3-trillion shortfall is expected this year, with the deficit seen moderating to a mere $901B next fiscal year. According to the early reports, it's a budget filled with short-term items to give the economy a boost, and tax increases to staunch the flow of red ink over the long term. Oh yes, and a $61B tab for banks to recoup costs from the financial crisis. To the surprise of no one, Republicans are already making their displeasure known. Linda will evaluate details that have already spilled out, and we'll need to hear whether Barack Obama's government is delivering a credible plan to get the U.S. on a sustainable fiscal track.

Fiscal management will be on the agenda in a trio of live events we're tracking today: Barack Obama comments on the budget at 11, former U.S. Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summersspeaks in Calgary around 2pm ET, and Ontario finance minister Dwight Duncan discusses his plan to eliminate the deficit at 12.

Amid all the bubble and balloon talk, today we get the country's largest mortgage insurer's perspective on the health of the housing market, when the CMHC delivers its outlook at 8:15am ET. Linda will break the headlines, and we'll hear from the CMHC's deputy chief economist on BDAM.

Barrick Gold has served notice its 20% stake in Russia's Highland Gold is non-core. Paul is looking into what the holding could fetch, and John Ing from Maison Placements will provide insight and preview gold sector earnings on Business Day at 10am.

The future of this country's telecom sector could become an even hotter topic, with speculation the government will soon announce rules for the next spectrum auction. This announcement could be paired with Ottawa's long-awaited review of foreign ownership restrictions. We need to be ready to explain what's at stake for the incumbents and newer wireless companies.

And there's some possible industry consolidation overseas that has grabbed investors' attention. Vodafone disclosed this morning it is in the early stages of evaluating a bid for Cable & Wireless Worldwide.

Let's not lose sight of opportunities to follow-up on SNC Lavalin's employee shuffle. After the closing bell Friday, the former exec VP of construction, Riadh Ben Aissa, fired back. In a statement, he said he wasn't fired – he resigned. He also asserts he spared no effort to protect the company's interests. He now plans appropriate legal recourse. Separately, the CBC says SNC is "in turmoil" over its relationship with Cynthia Vanier, who was contracted to do fact-finding in Libya, and was subsequently arrested in Mexico amid allegations she was involved in a plot to usher Saadi Gadhafi out of Libya. We need to keep peeling away the layers of this story, and hearing what it means for SNC's global operations.

Air Canada has reached yet another tentative agreement with one of its unions. This time, it's dispatchers who appear to be on board – pending ratification. But what about the pilots? Kristine is digging into it.

There's plenty more, including Japan's economy shrinking more than anticipated under the weight of the yen, and borrowing costs slipping in Italy. But that'll do for now.

There are few days in the calendar that investors get such a transparent view into their own portfolios as this. If you don't own shares in one of the Canadian companies reporting today, either through mutual funds, an ETF or outright, you probably aren't invested in Canada at all.

Among the companies we are focusing on today is Manulife, which reported its second-straight quarterly loss as near record-low interest rates continued to weigh on investment returns. Canada's biggest insurance company said it slumped to a net loss of $69 million, or 5 cents a share, from a profit of $1.8 billion, or 96 cents a share, a year earlier. The loss appears to be half the 10 cent-loss expected by analysts but due to the number of one-time charges and gains and adjustments for this and that, it's tough to determine whether the numbers are comparable. The company also said its chief financial officer, Michael Bell, is leaving the company.

BCE, Canada's biggest telecom company, said fourth-quarter profit rose to 62 cents a share from 59 cents a share a year ago, missing the average estimate by 4 cents. The company also reported revenue that came in just shy of analysts' forecasts as tougher competition in the key markets of Ontario and Quebec captured new customers.

The company said it sees fiscal 2012 earnings per share in the range of $3.13 to $3.18, compared with an average analyst estimate for profit of $3.20 a share. This is one of Canada's most competitive industries, one in which opponents are forging alliances in some businesses even as they fight tooth and nail to gain a slight advantage in others. Paul Bagnell has the file.

Other companies that have opened the books on their quarters today include Air Canada, Teck Resources, Great-West Lifeco, Precision Drilling, Cameco, Inmet, Shoppers Drug Mart, Cineplex, Canadian Tire and Husky Energy.

Ian Telfer is the Chairman of Goldcorp, Uranium One and the World Gold Council. He is also the target of OSC allegations that he acted contrary to the public interest by allowing a friend to purchase shares in a private company he was involved with using her brother-in-law's trading account. The OSC also alleges that Telfer schooled his friend in how to use BlackBerry PIN messages to avoid any paper trails that her employer, GMP Securities, might stumble upon. Telfer will address those allegations today at 2:30 p.m. ET.

John Taylor is the Chairman, CEO, CIO and Founder of FX Concepts, one of the world's biggest currency hedge fund, and he has a message for Greece: Get out, get out now! He justifies his is cri de coeur with this simple argument: "The self-serving cacophony from Euro-officials and Euro zone politicians arguing that you will be far worse outside the euro than in it are only promoting their own interests -- not yours." Leave the euro-zone, Taylor says, and "you will be free to choose your own course." In the meantime, Greece's leaders just agreed on an austerity package that they can now lay at the feet of the Troika like some mendicant before his medieval lord. Euro area finance ministers meet this afternoon. Taylor sits down with us at 10:30 a.m. ET.

U.S. stock futures are drifting lower after China's inflation unexpectedly accelerated in January, undermining optimism for more monetary easing for the world's economic growth engine. Economists point out, however, that a weeklong holiday to celebrate the Chinese New Year may have driven prices higher temporarily, an anomaly that allow monetary authorities to begin easing again in the months ahead. In Britain, the Bank of England increased its own monetary stimulus by raising its asset purchase target by 50 billion pounds to 325 billion pounds.

Stock movers today are likely to include Diamond Foods after the company said it will restate earnings for the past two years and ousted CEO Michael Mendes and its CFO for their roles in accounting for the payment of tens of millions of dollars to walnut growers. The news also puts in further jeopardy Diamond's $1.5 billion deal to buy Proctor & Gamble's Pringles unit.

Pepsico is likely to be active after the company said it would cut 8,200 jobs, or 3 percent of its global workforce.

Facebook IPO tempting but investors be wary By Larry MacDonald

With Facebook’s mammoth IPO inundating the news these days, it’s a good time to remind retail investors they are generally better off avoiding IPOs when they first come out. According to research conducted by University of Florida Professor Jay Ritter, stocks newly listed on U.S. exchanges from 1970 to 2008 trailed stocks of similar market capitalization by an average 4.7% one year after launch, and by 4.0% three years after.

But IPOs are hard to resist. Brokerages want the new issues to do well, so they engage in heavy promotion. And the IPOs for exciting new companies are usually big news items in the media.

Nevertheless, the real investment winners traditionally have been the brokerages’ best customers who are favoured with allocations before the big pop that often occurs on the first day of trading. Ordinary investors don’t usually get a chance to buy until trading begins in the open market (and as a result end up with results like those in Professor Ritter’s findings).

Most serious books on investing advise against buying IPOs.

Burton Malkiel notes in A Random Walk Down Wall Street: “Investors should be very wary of purchasing today’s hot issue. Most initial public offerings underperform the stock market as a whole. ... The managers of the companies themselves … try to time their sales to coincide with a peak in the prosperity of their companies. …”

Benjamin Graham states in The Intelligent Investor: “An elementary requirement for the intelligent investor is an ability to resist the blandishments of salesmen offering new common stock issues during bull markets. ... Some of these issues may prove excellent buys—a few years later when nobody wants them.”

Stephen Jarislowsky writes In The Investment Zoo: “New issues are typically well promoted. ... My experience is that you can buy nine out of 10 new issues at a lower price a year or two later. … I generally avoid new issues. …”

Jeremy Siegel argues in The Future for Investors: “Investing in IPOs is much akin to playing the lottery. There will be a few huge winners, such as Microsoft and Intel, but those who regularly invest in all IPOs will fall significantly behind those who invest in stocks already trading in the public markets.”

NORTHERN TIGER RESOURCES REPORTS FINAL 2011 DRILL RESULTS AT 3ACE PROPERTY, YUKON

Northern Tiger Resources Inc. has received assays for the final nine diamond drill holes from the 2011 drilling campaign at the 3Ace property in the southeast Yukon. The current results extend the Main zone an additional 50 metres along strike to the north and continue to demonstrate the zone's strong downdip continuity. Key results from the nine holes being reported include:

3A-11-19 -- 1.18 grams per tonne (g/t) gold over 31.7 metres;
3A-11-33 -- 2.58 g/t gold over 53.0 metres, including 17.72 g/t over two metres;
3A-11-34 -- 4.37 g/t over 10.0 metres and 70.11 g/t over 1.1 metres.
"The strong results from the first major drill program have confirmed 3Ace as one of the Yukon's significant new gold discoveries," says Greg Hayes, president of Northern Tiger. "We are eagerly anticipating the upcoming 2012 exploration season to both expand the Main zone mineralization and to further evaluate the kilometres of gold-in-soil anomalies that remain to be drill tested."

Main zone hole 3A-11-35 was a 50-metre step-out to the north of hole 3A-11-14, and also intersected two zones of significant gold mineralization (hole 3A-11-14 returned assays of 4.95 g/t gold over 7.2 metres and 0.59 g/t gold over 27.0 metres -- see news release dated Sept. 26, 2011). Holes 3A-11-19, 31 and 33 were steeper holes drilled from existing pads and hole 3A-11-34 was a 25-metre step-back hole. All four of these holes intercepted significant gold mineralization and continue to demonstrate the downdip continuity of the Main zone. The drilled strike length of the Main zone is now 220 metres, and it remains open along strike to the north and downdip.

Two scout holes from a single set-up were drilled in the North zone. Visible gold was observed in hole 3ANZ-11-01; however, the drill core split sample sent to the lab assayed only 0.4 g/t gold. No significant assays were returned from the second North zone hole. Two scout holes were also drilled from a single set-up at the Road showing, intersecting a number of narrow zones of relatively low-grade gold mineralization.

Iran predicts global oil prices to soar by 50 per cent

Iranian officials predicted that global oil prices would soar by 50 per cent in the wake of EU sanctions as the country's oil minister declared exports to "some countries" would be cut off.

In what will be seen as evidence of brinksmanship, Iran's parliament postponed debate on a proposal immediately to halt oil deliveries to the EU, which accounts for 20 per cent of Tehran's exports of crude.

Despite postponing the parliamentary debate, Rostam Qasemi, Iran'senergy minister, promised that exports to some countries, which he did not name, would be ended "soon".

Experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency arrived in Tehran on a three-day mission to investigate the suspected military dimensions of Iran's nuclear programme to a flurry of anti-Western invective.

A damning report released by the body in November accused Iran of military-related atomic activities for the first time.

The visit comes when Iran's relationship with the West is a fraught as at any time in recent years after the regime reacted with fury to a decision by the EU and the US this month to sanction the country's central bank and oil sector.

Gold appears to be making a reversal at oversold and long term support levels breaking a 5 month downtrend. Notice the strong volume accumulation as The Fed announces negative interest rates until late 2014. This is bullish for precious metals. In early August through October we advised a hold and urged caution. Since it pulled back it provided two secondary buypoints where we said it is buying time while others preached that the gold and silver market bull market had ended. Now gold appears to be bouncing off our buypoints similar to January 2011 and regaining its 50 and 200 day to the upside. Now the weak hands will come back at much higher prices

...A potent upward move in gold and silver in addition to the oversold miners (Gdx & ASR) is just beginning to occur. Our scenario was to maintain our long term core precious metal positions even though such a posture was temporarily painful as many analysts concluded wrongly that deflation, bonds and the U.S. dollar were the only safe harbors.

What about the U.S. dollar now? Note all the media hoopla that regaled us with strength of the dollar recently. News from Europe and Washington appears to be melting the U.S. Dollar under the cover of all of this stimulative warming. We have called for this surprise rally we are observing in the face of all this dollar and treasury hoopla. How uneasy must be the shorts who have been caught by this recent rise. Short sellers went into October’s market with the largest short position since 2008. Such a one-sided posture is often punished as the shorts run to cover and thereby add to the upward move.

Technically there have been gaps from 2011 that need to be filled on the upside in precious metals and miners. We note that institutions have been hit hard by the gold’s price decline. Hedge funds must’ve been selling stocks that they held in common in order to meet margin calls. Additionally this consideration may have influenced collateral damage among investors. Perhaps the current rise may indicate the recent downtrend has been broken to the upside.

Jan. 23 (Bloomberg) -- Gold will probably reach $2,300 an ounce in 2012 and may top $3,500 in three years, Alacer Gold Corp. Chief Executive Officer Ed Dowling said.

Concerns about sovereign debt and increased demand for gold in emerging markets including China will be positive for prices, Dowling said in a telephone interview Jan. 20.

“There’s only one way for gold to go and that’s really up,” Dowling said. “I think we’ll see $2,300 this year.”

Gold has risen for 11 straight years on increased investor demand. Futures for February delivery rose 0.9 percent to settle at $1,678.30 an ounce on the Comex in New York.

Alacer, the second-biggest U.S. gold miner by market value, was formed when Anatolia Minerals Development Ltd. bought Avoca Resources Ltd. last year for A$1.21 billion ($1.27 billion). The Englewood, Colorado-based company has risen 19 percent in Toronto since the deal closed on Feb. 18.

Dowling wants to increase production from operations in Australia and Turkey to 800,000 ounces a year by 2015, from around 400,000 ounces in 2011, he said. The company is focused on expanding its existing assets, rather than growing through acquisitions, Dowling said.

Alacer doesn’t expect to sell shares to raise money for project development, he said.

The company plans to consolidate its three debt facilities into a single revolving facility with a capacity of more than $200 million in the next few months, Dowling said. The current facilities have a combined capacity of about $130 million, he said.

Newmont Mining Corp., based in Greenwood, Colorado, is the largest U.S. gold miner.
